It is a good camera. I do not own this model but I have an Pentax *ist DL and K10D. The DL is most similar to the K100D except a few more recent changes.

The main reason I switched from the DL to the K10D is not the increase in MP from 6 to 10, it was because of the battery.

The K100D (and all Pentax models use except for the K10D and 20D) use AA batteries. What's great about AA's is you can buy them at any local tourist trap on the go. But even the best rechargeable Ni-MH do not last as long as the Lithium Ions.

Other than that the K100D is a good camera. If you have the extra money though I would go with a K10D since it has a better battery life.

(BTW the K200D and K20D come out in April)
References :
If you really like the Pentax brand camera, buy one of the older K10's or the new K20. The use the longer lasting Li-ion batteries. The other Pentax DSLR's use AA's and have a very short battery life.
References :
ProFotog

A good choice.

I also think the Sony A100 is a good choice.
References :
No better or worse than the myriad of others on the market. All the name brand cameras are good now.

The real determining factor is no different than it has been since photography was invented. The camera, and results acheived, depends far more on the knowledge and talent of the PHOTOGRAPHER than the camera, it is just a tool.
