Just got Nikon D300 today. I have to say that is the best camera I’ve ever used besides Canon 1Ds Mark II. It takes amazing photos with amazing color tone and sharpness. I recommend D300! No doubt!
Nikon D300 hands down…
Why??

You know what, if you have a Pentax or a Nikon in your hand it matters little, imagination and thought create the best images.
Which is better? Who can say? The Nikon infrastructure offers amazing support and a myriad of heritage lenses. The Pentax offers good quality at a reasonable price.
I would choose Nikon because of the depth and flexibility of the lenses and accessories.

Depends on what you want to shoot.
The Pentax has better resolution with 14mp and still has excellent noise performance.
Built in shake reduction works with all Pentax lenses made since 1975, so it is tops for heritage compatibitlity.

While Pentax produces a range of premium lenses ( labelled * or Limited ) they really only cover the focal length range up to 135mm with pro-quality zooms.
So for serious pro-sports shooters the Nikon has a better range of pro quality focal length telephoto zooms.

"A Nikon doesn’t make you a professional, it makes you a Nikon owner". I have been shooting with Pentax for almost 40 years and have stayed with them mostly because of "backward" compatability with all my old lenses, etc. I shoot with a K10 and plan on upgrading to the K20 once it hits the stores here. If I were to change brands I would probably go with Canon. My suggestion is go look at all the different cameras, decide on which features and "bells and whistles" you really need for the type of photography you want to do. I mostly shoot landscapes and nature and the Pentax gives high quality results, as would the Canon and Nikon. If I were doing a lot of studio work I would probably go with Nikon.

The K20D.
Extremely well-sealed against water and dust.
Image Stabilization in the camera body. No reason to pay for it with every lens you buy.
Uses every K-mount AF lens made with full functionality. No reason to pay for AF with every lens you buy.
Uses every K-mount manual focus lens made since 1975. Yes, there are some limitations but they’ll have the benefit of in-camera stabilization. You can even buy an adapter to use the older Pentax screw-mount lenses.
