Starting to feel like I made a mistake with Pentax.?
Posted by admin | Under Pentax K20D Lenses Tuesday Mar 9, 2010I bought Pentax as my first D-SLR but now I’m starting to feel like I’ve made a mistake. I kind of wished that I went with Sony instead….
Ugh, make me feel better please. Tell me why I didn’t make a mistake.
Pentax isn’t bad at all, I mean they make great bodies, in my opinion they make bodies and lenses that surplus the cost unlike Canikons, Weather-proofing, top LCD, great pricing for such a big package, etc. Not trying to say that they’re not good, they’re pretty good but I feel like they aren’t enough, they aren’t boosting out enough at once. They did release a K-7 that boasted a better low-light AF which all previous Pentax had, but at the same time it’s not that big of a difference in image quality when in comparison with the K20D. Sure it’s a great body, but it’s still a APS-C and maybe when Pentax does release a full-frame in like 6+ years or so, most of their DA lenses won’t work with them anyways which is what I’m investing in right now.
I went with Pentax because I don’t even know now when I read and see Sony becoming bigger and better everyday. I mean I read about the in-body image stabilization, weather-proofing, etc from Pentax. But then Sony also has the in-body image stabilization too. Sony went in the DSLR game way later than Pentax did… Yet they’re already busting out great bodies. Not just that, Pentax hasn’t even released a expert or professional range DSLR either, they’ve only launched two lines and that’s entry and advanced. Sony already popped a full-frame plus rumors are they’re going to release a full frame under 3,000 soon that will rock Nikon and Canon’s price of their full frames. Sony doesn’t have that much lenses compared to the big boys, but they are breaking out lenses from left and right. Sony has the money and they have the research & development to boost out even more lenses in their line-up, I feel like Sony has it solid and spot on in the DSLR game. Pentax is just playing catch-up the way I see it.
Help me feel better please, make me like my Pentax again… Ughhh
I currently own a K-m/K2000, DA L 18-55 kit lens, Sigma 17-70/2.8-4.5 (replaced my kit lens), D-Xenon 12-24/4.0, FA 50/1.4, Metz 48 AF-1 flash.
you did not make a mistake. just cause their top of the line is considered "semi-pro" doesn’t mean you don’t get amazing quality images with it.
I’ve been shooting with Pentax for years and love it. their lenses are incredible, and keeping the image stabilization in-body means that the pure optics of the lenses keeps the cost down without sacrificing quality at all. all the shots on my site were shot with pentax cameras and pentax lenses. I’ll be upgrading to the K-7 soon, and can’t wait.
Bro, it’s not the hardware it is the photographer that’s important.
Sooner or later Pentax will probably release a FF dSLR. In the meantime don’t get stuck in the "grass is greener" syndrome. Use what you have and enjoy it.
If you are into advertising or landscape then nothing beats FF…I feel for you there for sure. Wide angle prime lenses work way better on a FF camera as well.
You do need FF now? Then you have no choice but to go with Sony at this time. If not, just hold onto your Pentax.

you’ve chosen a great brand. maybe you can’t hear the name of it but it’s not a consider point.
is it bad car ?? no!
for example i seldomly see Bentley cars
not other brands bad, all are great, Canon, Nikon Sony …
don’t forget: YOU can take photos. not the camera.

Sorry, I can’t "make" you like you camera – you bought it. All I can do is remind you that it is what you do with the camera, not the camera itself that you should be concentrating on. It’s not about which manufacturer has the solid spot in the camera market, you sound like a camera commercial, the subject of which thinks he got the wrong one based on a brochure, or a review. A camera is a camera. They all do one thing – take pictures. Either deal, or find another hobby.

This is a tough one. I mean, it is a tough position to be in.
If you really like your pentax and your only concern is when they will release a ff camera body, then like Mere Mortal said, I would expect that to happen eventually. With the recession nearing its end, anyone who has survived to this point is only going to get stronger from here. So the ff is only a matter of time. If going ff is your plan, just don’t buy anything but full-frame lenses.
On the other hand, how much regret are you feeling? Is this something that is going to go away if Pentax does release a ff camera body? Can you enjoy shooting with the Pentax in the meantime?
If you are going to continue to be unhappy, now is the time to switch brands. You have made a fairly significat investment already. You will take a loss, but not as much as if you invest more money now and switch later.
You just need to really consider your choices and weigh them carefully.
Hope you get it all sorted out to your liking.
edit-I think that people are entirely missing the point. You plan to go ff and currently there are no ff Pentax DSLRs. I understand where you are coming from. You should hear all the comments coming from Sony users who are peeved that there hasn’t been an a700 replacement even announced yet. The rumors of the a850 are that it is ff and that is not really an a700 replacement but more of an upgrade. I am happy with my a700, but I have plans to go ff as well. So aside from the kit lens, all of my lenses are ff.

Sony are not exclusive camera makers as such where pentax are with all their experience that goes back decades as camera makers.
They know what they’re doing. Sony good with the innovations I’ll admit and their cameras are excellent lets not pretend otherwise but so what. Are you really going to need all that technology? Will it ultimately make you pictures any better in the real world?
Not really in my opinion. Pentax make brilliant cameras and the rest my friend is up to you and your talent to make great pictures.
FF camera’s are not all they are cracked up to be in my opinion anyway…well unless your talking about the canon 5D mark 2 which is.

If you’re an unapologetic gearhead, which is possible, given that you seem more interested in the technical features of your equipment than in the images that it can produce, then by all means get that Sony (formerly Minolta). After you become dissatisfied with that, go and get that 80 megapixel Nikon 8,000,000D.
As another has suggested, it’s not the camera but the wetware behind the view finder that determines 99% of the quality of an image. Yet you don’t once mention what about the image-making qualities of the Pentax has led to your dissatisfaction. For the record, Pentax has been making SLRs for decades. They were one of the pioneers. Their cameras are and have always been highly regarded by accomplished photographers.
Let me also disabuse you of the so-called "full-frame" myth. A 35-mm sensor is not the be all and end all of photography. The APS-C sensor has established itself as a high quality sensor that is more common than the 35-mm sensor. Show me someone who is an avowed devotee of the larger sensor and I will point out that it is inferior compared to, say, a digital back for a Mamiya-Sekor medium frame format.
Go out and take some pictures instead of ruminating about gear.
By the way, I am a Canon shooter. I don’t own stock in Pentax.
