I bought Pentax as my first D-SLR but now I’m starting to feel like I’ve made a mistake. I kind of wished that I went with Sony instead….
Ugh, make me feel better please. Tell me why I didn’t make a mistake.
Pentax isn’t bad at all, I mean they make great bodies, in my opinion they make bodies and lenses that surplus the cost unlike Canikons, Weather-proofing, top LCD, great pricing for such a big package, etc. Not trying to say that they’re not good, they’re pretty good but I feel like they aren’t enough, they aren’t boosting out enough at once. They did release a K-7 that boasted a better low-light AF which all previous Pentax had, but at the same time it’s not that big of a difference in image quality when in comparison with the K20D. Sure it’s a great body, but it’s still a APS-C and maybe when Pentax does release a full-frame in like 6+ years or so, most of their DA lenses won’t work with them anyways which is what I’m investing in right now.
I went with Pentax because I don’t even know now when I read and see Sony becoming bigger and better everyday. I mean I read about the in-body image stabilization, weather-proofing, etc from Pentax. But then Sony also has the in-body image stabilization too. Sony went in the DSLR game way later than Pentax did… Yet they’re already busting out great bodies. Not just that, Pentax hasn’t even released a expert or professional range DSLR either, they’ve only launched two lines and that’s entry and advanced. Sony already popped a full-frame plus rumors are they’re going to release a full frame under 3,000 soon that will rock Nikon and Canon’s price of their full frames. Sony doesn’t have that much lenses compared to the big boys, but they are breaking out lenses from left and right. Sony has the money and they have the research & development to boost out even more lenses in their line-up, I feel like Sony has it solid and spot on in the DSLR game. Pentax is just playing catch-up the way I see it.
Help me feel better please, make me like my Pentax again… Ughhh
I currently own a K-m/K2000, DA L 18-55 kit lens, Sigma 17-70/2.8-4.5 (replaced my kit lens), D-Xenon 12-24/4.0, FA 50/1.4, Metz 48 AF-1 flash.
you did not make a mistake. just cause their top of the line is considered "semi-pro" doesn’t mean you don’t get amazing quality images with it.
I’ve been shooting with Pentax for years and love it. their lenses are incredible, and keeping the image stabilization in-body means that the pure optics of the lenses keeps the cost down without sacrificing quality at all. all the shots on my site were shot with pentax cameras and pentax lenses. I’ll be upgrading to the K-7 soon, and can’t wait.
This is a video of me giving myself a crappy haircut. I tested out my PentaxK20D’s interval shooting feature, taking a photo every 7 seconds. The lens is a Zenitar 16mm Fisheye. Music is Maple Leaf Rag by Scott Joplin… public domain…sucka.
I love my K20D and have invested quite a bit in lenses, flash, etc. But after my recent trip to Japan, I’m getting frustrated with the slow focus, slow write speed, as well as lack of support and accessories from local camera shops. With the exception of Yodobashi, even Japanese camera shops had little to no Pentax gear.
I test drove the 50D and was really impressed with the capture rate and AF speed. Should I start eBay’ing my Pentax gear and start over? Or stick with the dark horse?
Hi C B,
There are good reasons for choosing Pentax (as I have), but fast AF, fast write speed, and support & accessories from local camera shops are not among them.
If those are the things you want, then yes, you should switch.
But you don’t say why you choose Pentax in the first place. I doubt it was fast AF, fast write speed, and support & accessories from local camera shops. What were the reasons, and are they still important to you? How much will you miss them (if at all) if you switch?
As you probably know, the K-7 has much improved AF speed. But Canon will continue to improve their models too.
I would suggest buying a 50D, and one lens for it that you expect to use a lot. Then, take it instead of the K20D when you wouldn’t have brought along your bag of lenses anyway.
Continue that for a few months. Do you find that you’re glad to take the Canon instead of the Pentax? Or do you find you’re rather take the Pentax?
After a few months of that at most, you won’t have to ask — you’ll know whether you want to switch. But I sure don’t know which way you’ll decide.
Of course, if you choose to keep the Pentax, you’ll lose a bit of money on reselling the Canon. But even so, it would be a small price to pay to be sure of which you really want.

Actually, Chaya, my 3 year old pitt bull/lab mix, has been walking for quite awhile (and can walk backwards for much longer than depicted here). Here, she waves, sits up and begs and then stands. Sofie, my German Shepherd mix, watches. The stop animation was shot with the Pentax K20D’s burst mode with a DA 14mm 2.8 lens and compiled with Quicktime Pro at 6 fps.
I have a beautiful Pentax SLR, not digital of course. I have two lenses that go with it – they are the main reason I’d like my upgrade to a Digital SLR to be a Pentax as well – so I can still use those lenses. Does anyone out there have advice for a Pentax shopper? Why is the K200D about $150 – $200 more than its competitors? Should I splurge and get the K20D? Does anyone know any fabulous sale sights for Pentax cameras? I wouldn’t mind getting a refurbished one.
Pentax make great digital SLRs and the mount is also shared with Samsung (it’s basically the old pentax K mount)
Be careful though because Pentax made two fits, the screw mount (where the lens screws into the camera body) and the bayonet mount (pentax K mount)
Only the k mount will work. Your lens will work as it did on your film body, so if you manually focused and used the mechanical aperture ring then you will do the same with the lens on the digital body.
Do bear in mind that Pentax only make cropped sensor dSLRs so your lens will have a conversion factor of 1.5x. this means that a 100mm lens would behave like a 150mm lens. Great for getting close, not great for wide angle.
As such it’s worth buying a kit with the basic 18-55 lens as this will keep your wide angle options open (the equivalent of the 18-55 is more like a 27-80mm lens on a 35mm body)
Mutlifocal lenses were designed to provide enhanced vision from all distances. An overwhelming majority of patients who have had the multifocal lense procedure do not have to rely on their glasses, opposed to those patients who have monofocal lenses.
