I want to upgrade to a digital camera and I was wondering what would be a good one to go with for an amateur photographer. I like the Cannon Rebel line of cameras but I was wondering what a more affordable option might be. What are your thoughts on the Pentax K100d. I learned on a Pentax K1000 and I read that most of the older lenses will fit the Pentax digital SLR cameras.
I believe the K100D and K100D Super have been discontinued. Newer models are the K10D and K20D.
Pentax is still using the venerable K-mount it introduced in 1975 so any older K-mount manual focus lens can be used with the newest DSLR cameras. There will be limited functionality (manual focus, stop-down metering) but they will enjoy the benefits of image stabilization since Pentax placed it in the camera body. If you have several K-mount lenses in good condition then buy the Pentax DSLR.
Since Sony bought the DSLR line from Konica-Minolta in 2006, the Sony Alpha (A) series cameras use the Minolta A-mount introduced with the Minolta Maxxum AF 35mm film camera of 1985. So any Maxxum AF lens will be right at home on the Sony A200 or A350 or A700. Sony also incorporates image stabilization in the camera body.

I bought the PentaxK20D a few days ago and just now noticed that the aperture on lenses without the "A" setting (on the aperture ring) stays wide open. I cannot change the aperture, even when I spin the aperture ring on the lens. Is there a mount that I can place between the lens and camera so I can use this feature or is there a setting that I have to change? I tried looking through the manual and on google, but can’t find any information.
I did not buy the kit lens when I ordered the camera because I assumed my other lenses would work fine on the K20D. I have one automatic lens, but it is a 75-55mm kit lens from my SF-1. I would like to be able to change the aperture on my 80-200mm, 50mm, and wide angle lenses too.
I already have "use of aperture ring" permitted.
These lenses do not have a lock that I can see. They are fully manual.
I have been using the camera in full manual mode, but the aperture still stays wide open, even when I take the picture. I have tried every mode and it is still the same.
proshooter: YAY!! I got it to work! Thank you so much!! =D
For non A lenses you can only use them in full manual metering mode.
As you have set the use aperture option the lens aperture should stop down automatically as the photo is being taken as per normal.

Does the aperture close when you use the depth of field preview facility?
all my non a lenses stop down on my Pentx *istDS and K10D and so should all K mount lenses on the K20D.
Unfortunately it may be faulty camera as the K20D should definitley work with all K mount lenses.
Question to photographers: Would it be great if someone would invent an inexpensive gadget that allows for digital photos with our old SLR cameras? Any ideas?
