Help with which camera to buy (40d or K20d)?

Monday Oct 26, 2009

So, I’m looking to buy either a Canon 40D or the Pentax K20D. Problem is I can’t decide which one I should buy. I’ve only been able to try out the 40D cause I can’t find a store that carries the K20D where I live. When I ask this question on Canon and Pentax forums, everyone says that their brand Camera is the better buy (naturally). So I tried to get an unbiased opinion on a Nikon forum, and they tell me to buy a D200 (I should’ve seen that one coming).

Can anyone help me out here? I like the feel and features of the Canon, but the pictures I’ve seen from the K20D simply look better than what I’ve seen from the 40D. Please give me some advice here.

The K20d is a fine camera, however, it all comes at a price. I would suggest that you get a Canon or Nikon digital SLR. These Manufacturers have much more accessories for you to choose from. I mean, you have lenses, for all price ranges, you have battery grips, and a Cable releases, better flashes, etc. Pentax has proven itself over the years, but it still doesn’t have the variety of lenses you can get with Nikon and Canon. The Nikon d200 and the 40d are Great cameras. The only reason why i would tend to lean a little to the 40d is because it has a larger screen, and can be used in live view- also has a few more little quirks. Each is a good camera though. I’ve used both Canon and Nikon DSLR’s, and i have to say, i’ve been impressed with both.

AF comparison of the K20D and K200D?

Monday Oct 19, 2009

I have several questions concerning the Pentax K20D camera when in comparison with others. Is the K20D’s auto focus quicker than the K200D? If not that big of a difference, Would it be smarter to save about 250-300 USD to get the K200D instead of the K20D? Also leave aside the video capabilities of the Nikon D5000 and the Canon Rebel T1i. Which one would you prefer, the K20D, D5000, or T1i and why?

Sorry for all these questions. I am a noob and wants a DSLR. I am serious about photography as a hobby. So the amount of knowledge I will have to learn does not matter (Damn right! Throw it at me). Therefore buying a cheap noob-friendly DSLR would be a waste of money because upgrade means losing money.

I’ve been doing quite a bit of research and it seems like the K20D and K200D has slower AF than it’s competitors but at the same time compensates this by having a better body than it’s competitors. I want to take pictures of cars and tennis. The Continuous shooting doesn’t really bother me much. How long do you think it will be before the K-7 drops in price after its release and by how much?

I would be happy to jump to a professional level DSLR and struggle to use it if I had the money, because in the end I’ll eventually know how to use it. So there’s no point in buying a lower model DSLR when I am willing to spend the cash to buy the better DSLR. So I would rather try to buy the most capable DSLR with its basic lenses kit available for my budget of just under 900 USD. So suggestions?

Here they are side by side

My advice is the Pentax K20 read the Owners opinions and then make up your mind.

If you use the new DA* Pentax lenses you get a much faster HSM auto focus than using the internal motor, focus speed really does depend on the lens you fit not all lenses need auto focus at all, lenses such as macro with their small depth of field are usually best manually focused, then the brighter pentaprism (as opposed to the dimmer pentamirror) viewfinder comes into its own. On the new K7 it’s the only camera offering a 100% view.

Having Image Stabilisation built into the camera is a big plus, it works with any lens fitted even a 40 year old K mount lens available for peanuts on eBay.

What Do You Think Of These Upcoming Cameras?

Monday Oct 12, 2009

The Canon 450D, Pentax K20D, K200D, and the supposed Nikon D60? What are your opinions on these soon to be released wonders? I was thinking about getting a Nikon D40x, but the lack of an internal motor and small size kept me from it. Hopefully, the replacement will not have these same problems. So, will you be looking into any of these entry level and prosumer cameras?

I have not seen anything on the D60, so I looked around a bit…

http://www.photographybay.com/2007/12/28/nikon-d60/

Not much real information…

If you like the D40, but want to use all the lenses, I say hold on another week or two and I’m sure the specs will be out before the camera is released.

I’m not a religious fanatic about Nikon, but you do know by now that I’m pretty far down the Nikon road. See what you think of the 450D vs. D60 when they are available to have and hold. I think the D60 will be smaller, but they might be just about the same. I still don’t see a rear command dial on the Canon and this just seems wrong to me after using it on all of the Nikon’s. It’s intuitive and each dial works the way you want it to for whatever function you need. You don’t have to hold down different buttons or step through menues. Just see how the Canon works with one dial or maybe you will find that it has two. I just don’t see it in the pictures I find,

As far as Live View being "training wheels," I’m going to take a different stand. I have wanted this for years for macro and I am finding it nice when using the tripod at heights a bit above my reach. Why is this all that different than a view camera? You can zoom in 13X to confirm focus on a critical piece. Frankly, it’s not very convenient to use, so you tend to use it only when it provides a distinct advantage. It really slows down the shooting process – way more than a typical point and shoot that uses the LCD for framing.

Canon 40D vs. Pentax k20D?

Tuesday Oct 6, 2009

Please help, both seem like great cameras, prices are comperable. Looking to buy a camera in a few weeks.

The Pentax k20d has some feature the Nikon D40 does not have. In addition, it has 14MP of resolution. Pentax makes cameras that are every bit the quality of Nikon. If the price is about the same, I would hit the Pentax, no hesitation. You can check out the review of both at dpreview.com.
